Why Minneapolis?

We really love it here.

Not because Minneapolis is some huge, world-famous city with a checklist of things you’re supposed to see. It’s more that everyday life here is just really good.The parks are a big part of why we love it here. Plus there are lakes all over the city, and they actually feel like they belong to everyone. They’re right in the middle of neighborhoods, easy to get to, and open for people to enjoy however they want. Since June 2026, we’ve been regularly sailing on Bde Mka Ska, just a 10 minute bike ride from our apartment.We also love that being outside here isn’t just a summer thing. Minneapolis really embraces winter instead of treating it as a season to get through. People keep using the parks, lakes, trails, and city all year, just in different ways. We’ve come to really appreciate that attitude toward winter — it makes the city feel alive even when it’s freezing, which it often isGetting around is its own part of why the city works so well for us. We bike places because it’s often genuinely the easiest way to get there, and between biking, walking, and transit, we can get to a lot of what we need without driving. After living here for a while, we ended up getting rid of our car altogether.Saint Paul is right next door, too. It has its own neighborhoods, restaurants, architecture, parks, and personality, but it’s easy to move between the two cities by bike or transit. We really do enjoy both cities (even though Minneapolis is definitely better).We’ve had so much fun exploring the food here. The Twin Cities are home to communities from all over the world, and that shows up in restaurants and dishes shaped by Hmong, Indigenous, Vietnamese, Mexican, East African, Scandinavian, and so many other cultures. There is always something new for us to try, and discovering all of it has been a really fun part of getting to know this place.Most of all we’ve been impressed by the kindness, courage, and resilience we’ve seen here.

Getting Around Minneapolis

Our biggest transportation recommendation: skip the rental car.Minneapolis is easy to explore without one, starting the moment you land. Light rail connects directly to the airport, and trains, buses, bus rapid transit, walking, biking, and rideshare can get you around the city from there. You can even take the train all the way to the Mall of America if that’s on your Minneapolis checklist.Public transit is also something we genuinely care about. We love that it makes cities more accessible, sustainable, and connected—and that it encourages us to experience a place alongside people whose lives may look different from our own. Getting outside our usual routines and comfort zones is part of what makes traveling somewhere new worthwhile.So if you’re able, we’d love for you to give Minneapolis without a car a try while you’re here. We think you may be surprised by how easy it is.

A small request from us: skip the rental carIf you’re visiting Minneapolis for the wedding, we’d love for you to experience the city without renting a car. You can take the light rail straight from the airport, and from there Minneapolis is well connected by trains, buses, bus rapid transit, walking, biking, and other options.This is more than a practical recommendation for us. Good public transit is something we care deeply about. It makes cities more accessible to people who can’t, don’t, or choose not to drive. It’s safer, better for the environment, and gives more people the freedom to move around their city independently.But one of our favorite things about transit is something a little less tangible: it puts us in the world with one another. Instead of moving through a city sealed inside our own cars, we share space with people whose lives may look completely different from ours. We notice our neighborhoods. We interact with strangers. Sometimes we have to get a little outside our comfort zones. We think there’s something really valuable—and really human—about that.At a time when it can feel especially easy to retreat into our own bubbles, we love the small reminder that a city belongs to all kinds of people, moving through it together.So, if you’re able, consider this our invitation to give it a try while you’re here.
